Protect Indiana's 13 Wild Areas
Sign IFA’s Petition to Reduce Commercial Logging and Establish 13 State Wild Areas Within Indiana’s State Forests
We, the undersigned, request that you use your authority as the chief executive of the State of Indiana and ultimate authority of the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources (IDNR), to take all necessary steps to reduce the commercial logging of our state forests to annual levels below 3.5 million board feet–a threshold that was maintained from the creation of the state forests until a surge in logging 10 years ago. We believe these levels of logging are seriously degrading the scenic, natural character of these public forests and destroying deep forest habitat needed by native wildlife. We also ask you to establish State Wild Areas by executive action–setting aside state forest tracts larger than 1,000 acres from logging or road building to provide for wilderness recreation and the preservation of habitat for forest-dependent species of flora and fauna in these forests, owned by all Hoosiers. Finally, we ask you to support legislation that would establish these Wild Areas.
